RIGHT TO INFORMATION- A “CHANGE” TO EXPECT

Whenever we hear the word “democracy“, one thing hits our pondering mind for sure i.e. “people“. Looking back to the days when we used to learn the easiest definition of democracy given by Abraham Lincoln which was “democracy is a government of the people, by the people, for the people”; however, after spending many years in Pakistan, it dawned on me that this definition surely holds a very powerful message for a layman and a citizen of any country. Where there are many rights bestowed upon us under the UN Charter of human rights – the rights which we can assert-if violated, rights on which we can raise our voice and the rights through which we can revise the system. But the power a common man holds doesn’t end here. There is another exemplary right declared for us which is “Right to Information“. Since most of the young lot is still unaware about this very law so, to sum up; under the Article-19A of the constitution, RTI authorizes the citizens to claim any relevant information from the working government bodies. This will mutually benefit the people and the working of our system by fortifying transparency and leading the services of the local bodies to better conditions. (Punjab Information Commission) Since the epoch of general elections has been at its brink, a “change” is being looked forward by the people. Change is only possible if people seek to get right information from the authorities by means of Right of Access to Information Act. This act is empowering the citizen of Pakistan to that extent that they can turn wrongs into rights and negatives into positives in the blink of an eye. These efforts subsequently will provide impetus to accountability in the country and eventually justice shall prevail. Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, a nominated governing party, declared in their manifesto 2018 about making certain that all the actions, information, and records of the government will be available to the people of Pakistan for its critical probe. PTI made sure that this scrutiny will be held in exactly the same way as it is executed internationally.(PTI Manifesto Final – 2018, 2018) It is the need of the hour to see that to what extent the nominated government will be able to implement this very law in a more convincing way. Nonetheless, it is incumbent upon us that we should play our part and take due action in the areas where it is required. Under the consistent counseling provided by Sustainable Social Development Organization, I being a responsible citizen playing my role and have sent a few applications to my areas’ concerned authorities in order to make a change in the society. Now it is your turn to participate actively in order for you to bring a “change”. > Bibliography PTI Manifesto Final – 2018. (2018).
