Sharp rise in gender-based violence in Punjab, convictions alarmingly low

A new report by the Sustainable Social Development Organization (SSDO) has revealed a worrying surge in gender-based violence across Punjab in 2024, with conviction rates remaining negligible.

The report, based on district-level data from January to December 2024, documents thousands of cases of violence, including rape, honour killings, abductions, and domestic abuse. The SSDO noted that despite the high number of reported incidents, very few perpetrators were brought to justice.

According to the findings, both urban and rural areas have seen a significant rise in gender-based crimes. Lahore topped the list with 532 reported rape cases, followed by Faisalabad with 340 cases and Kasur with 271.

The SSDO has urged authorities to take immediate measures to address the growing crisis and improve the prosecution of gender-based crimes.
